Ranger's Apprentice Book 1:The Ruins Of Gorlan

In the fantastic series of the book  Ranger's Apprentice"The Ruins Of Gorlan" by John Flanagan.A boy was very nervous on the choosing day. The choosing day was where castle wards who turn 15 gets chosen for the privilege an apprentice to craft masters such as the battleschool, diplomatic services, scribe school, cook school, and becoming a ranger.

                             Horace the bully of the castle wards was tall, muscular and a natural athlete was chosen as an apprentice to Sir Rodney, the battle master;Alyssa was chosen as an apprentice to Lady Pauline, the diplomatic services. George was chosen as a scribe for the Nigel, the scribe master;Jenny was appointed as the cook for master Chubbs,the cook. After all that it only left for him to choose his apprenticeship to any one of the craft masters. In the end his dream of becoming chosen to battle school was crushed when master Chubbs told  everyone that day when he stole stole a tray of sweet cakes after climbing the drainpipe  to the kitchen and when Lady Pauline told them that he unleashed two rabbits during one of the important legal debates.

                            Then suddenly, the mysterious ranger named Halt passed a note to Baron Arald, the lord of the Redmont fiefdom and then the choosing day was over. The boy was curious about what the note had said so he went up to the Barons tower after avoiding the patrol guard while climbing the stone tower like a spider. He opened the window and slipped inside unseen. Then he saw the note and reached for it and when a hand suddenly reached out and seized him by the arm, he had been caught...where had he come from? He was sure there had been nobody else in the room. And there had been no sound of a door opening. Then he would remember how the ranger would wrap himself in that strange mottled gray_green cloak and melt into the background and blend in with the shadows until he was invisible.      

                          In the end he was apprenticed to the ranger Halt, a moody and stern teacher but later on he found out that his father saved Halt from a troop of Wargals(ugly misshapen beasts). Then Halt felt the need to save the child form starvation so he left him on the front door of the ward with a note attached to the blanket ,reading simply:.

                           His mother died in childbirth. His father died a hero
